West’s practice is a chronicle of the built environment, specific encounters of place and time, studies of the ennui and isolation of the individual in suburban America. By removing all text that would be apparent in signs and labels of the scene is redacted and presented as simple blocks of flat, solid colour, transcending cultural and language barriers. Through this process he reduces space and experience to a mechanical facsimile and simulacrum while creating a conscience collective of shared analogous experiences; each viewer will have their own interpretation of the paintings as generated by their own separate and unique set of experiences, reflective of the affective influences of one’s surrounding environment, both past and present.
West’s practice is a chronicle of the built environment, specific encounters of place and time which are initially personally experienced, and subsequently documented. I photograph the scenes and then hand draw and paint the images. I do not introduce any perspective distortion that is typically generated by the camera lens, or perceived by the human eye. Additionally, all text that would be apparent in signs and labels of the scene is redacted and presented as simple blocks of flat, solid colour, transcending cultural and language barriers. Through this process of personal experience and artistic transposition, I reduce and clarify description of space and experience, a stylised representation of reality, a mechanical facsimile, a simulacrum; while maintaining a reflection of the notions of fate, the sublime, isolation, dream, memory, vision, and history.
